Air Liquide aims to power the world with clean and renewable energy sources. We innovate to develop sustainable energy solutions for the transportation, materials handling and electrical power sectors. Air Liquide is a key player in the fast-growing hydrogen energy sector, with expertise in hydrogen production, fuelling infrastructure and uses for the end user. Our renewable energy activities extend to solutions to capture and upgrade biogas from sources like landfills and wastewater sludge to produce clean and renewable natural gas that can be used for power, heating or transportation.

 

With Blue Hydrogen, Air Liquide is working toward the gradual decarbonization of its hydrogen production dedicated to energy applications.

We are committed to producing at least 50% of the hydrogen necessary for these applications through carbon-free processes by 2020.

Solar

There are currently a number of CSP plants operating and under construction in South Africa.

Concentrated Solar Power Plants (CSP) use a large number of mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a small area. The heat from the concentrated solar energy is used to directly or indirectly convert high pressure water to steam.

In South Africa Kaxu Solar One plant was the first CSP PLANT to use parabolic mirrors followed by many more. The Northern Cape is clearly becoming South Africa’s solar energy hub.

Air Liquide aims to power the world with clean and renewable energy sources, with exceptional international references Air Liquide has been a reputable supplier to a number of South Africa’s Independent Power Producers (IPP’s). Nitrogen is used for the  “blanket” application of the thermal storage medium.

Wind

Wind as an energy source is only practical in areas that have strong and steady winds.Wind power offers a clean, free and renewable alternative to energy generated by fossil fuels. Air Liquide offers construction and welding technology and expertise to the  local power generation sites.

Biogas & Natural gas

Our renewable energy activities extend to solutions to capture and upgrade biogas from sources like landfills and wastewater sludge to produce clean and renewable natural gas that can be used for power, heating or transportation.

We additionally offer Welding and Construction material for the Oil and gas exploration industry.

TRANSPORTATION

Clean and renewable hydrogen energy solutions offer a response to the challenges of clean transportation: reducing greenhouse gasses, local pollution in our cities and dependency on oil-based fuels. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles generate zero polluting emissions, zero particles and zero noise.

These vehicles are efficient for long-distance journeys, offering a 300 mile driving range as well as a refuelling time of less than five minutes.

ELECTRICAL POWER

Air Liquide provides solutions for biogas upgrading and biomethane liquefaction. Hydrogen can also be used for power and resiliency in the grid through fuel cell and storage applications.

Electricity for isolated sites

We provide sustainable energy for the power supply of remote sites using high-pressure hydrogen logistics and hydrogen fuel cell systems. The generation of electricity for emergency services or first aid during one-off events in isolated locations is another possible use.

Waste to renewable energy

We are developing innovative technologies that use waste to generate renewable energy and cleaner fuels in a sustainable way. Agriculture and household waste naturally generate raw biogas, a renewable energy source. Air Liquide technologies can capture raw biogas released into the atmosphere and convert it into energy that can be a direct substitute for fossil fuel gas used to produce heat, electricity and clean fuels.

Carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are removed from raw biogas (mainly comprised of methane and carbon dioxide) by selective permeation through a hollow fiber membrane. The driving force is the partial pressure difference across the membrane for each gas component.
